This Sunday, August 26th, 8/26/12 is the most important day for Dogs. Since 2004, the National Dog Day Foundation had created the National Dog Day calling all into ”Saving 10,000 Dogs (a year) - One Day at a Time." Its purpose is also to honor and promote rescuing dogs from homelessness or abuse.
“National Dog Day acknowledges the important role that dogs play in our lives," says Best Friends Vice President Renee Coughlin.
Why National Dog Day? Dogs cheer us up when we are down. They cuddle with us when we are lonely. They keep us safe and even aid in search and rescues! They are our best friends! Least we can do is to spoil them for a day, well, maybe a little. Here are a few ideas on how to spoil your dog for a day from the National Dog Day website:
- Buy your dog a fun new dog toy
- Give your dog a massage or holistic spa treatment
- Take your dog to the beach
- Let your dog eat (dog-safe) ice cream!
Speaking of Ice cream, the Best Friends Pet Care will be handing out a free dog ice cream treat to the dogs who visit their centers across the US on Saturday, August 25th. Go to: www.bestfriendspetcare.com to locate a nearby location. “National Dog Day acknowledges the important role that dogs play in our lives," says Best Friends Vice President Renee Coughlin. And, while we celebrate dogs every day at Best Friends, we wanted to do something extra special for this occasion.

In honor of this special day, the Haus Of Paws Blog would like to honor Lucy, the 12 year-old Golden retriever who had brought us so much joy. Lucy helped launch Haus Of Paws Blog by being featured as our very first post back in April of this year. She was a rescue when she was 10 years old. My aunt kindly took her in despite never owning a dog before but Lucy had since provided ultimate joy to the household. Everyone always praised what a wonderful dog she is. She has since gone through surgery. There are now signs of her slowing down due to her age, but her enthusiasm of greeting visitors never fades. Lucy, thank you for coming into our lives and we love you and happy National Dog Day!
